Another Fine Bowl in Maple Silkwood

HERE is one of my most recently finished pieces.

Fine Bowl in Maple Silkwood by Bob Gilmour

This is the second piece I have created from a piece of maple silkwood given to me by one of the oldest timber cutting families in the area where I live.

Queensland Maple, and it's less common relative Maple Silkwood, are prominent trees in the coastal range forests and rainforest in the Julatten area (north of Cairns). The maples are fine furniture timbers in this country.

Maple silkwood is not common at all any more and is desirable because of it's subtle figuring and range of colors. When Bill Mckean tossed a piece of silkwood out of his ute on the ground in front of me back in about 2002, I eagerly accepted it.

This bowl, and also the previous smaller bowl, deviate a little from my usual style and feature a more fuller shape, while still retaining the small base large overhang formula.

I'm pretty happy with this piece.
