Fine Bowl in Jarrah
As has happened before on occasions, I was cutting a 2 inch thick piece of jarrah into utensil blanks for my Forest Treasures functional-ware business. I got to this section of the board that had some figuring and a small amount of 'flame' timber apparently due to the presence of a small limb nearby in the living state. I can't use that sort of intrusion for utensils because the grain needs to run linearly for strength ... so, the obvious decision was to apportion part of the board for a bowl.
The board was almost perfectly crown sawn, so I knew if I penetrated from the tree-outside face, I would achieve some pretty nice concentric growth ring patterning ... which is, in fact, what did happen. I gave the piece a really nice long drawn out shape and as small a base as possible.
I achieved a very minimalist organic shape with this bowl ... I'm very happy with it.
