Flat Bowl in Australian Red Cedar

Red Cedar is one of Australia's finest furniture and artwork timbers. Although typically soft and light, Red Cedar finishes up with a warm deep glow and ranges in colour from pink to deep chocolate.

The piece of wood from which I created this small bowl came from a furniture-maker friend (Dennis Priston) about 5 or so years ago ... this was the last of several offcuts which he passed on to me. His stock had derived from 6 red Cedar tree logs which he had purchased from Cooktown many years previously. Dennis had chainsaw-milled them himself before stacking the wood out to dry in a home-built solar kiln. Much of the wood showed moderate to high figuring.

It is always quite a challenge to obtain shape and graceful form from thin pieces of wood stock ... especially, when the available piece is a small irregular shape (as offcuts usually are). This piece also shows a long cedar pattern in the grain which had to be taken into account. I originally created a much larger irregularly shaped bowl ... almost three years ago, in fact ... but, when I pulled out the rough blank a few weeks ago I didn't like the shape I'd created and began trimming it down until I finished up with something acceptable.
