I just received my shipment of sawn timber from the timber merchant (Wren Timbers) I use in Cairns (Australia). I particularly wanted a wide piece of New Guinea Rosewood (Amboyna - Pterocarpus indicus) for a project lurking in the back of my mind. To my joy, Bruce had a 450mm (18 inch) wide board which he sent up to me with my order of jarrah, kauri and silver ash.
Wren timbers imports timber straight from New Guinea ... so, there are often some special finds when the container comes in. This 18 inch board is really wide. It's rare these days to see timber of that dimension. New Guinea Rosewood is quite stable, so there is no cupping or warping and the wood is very dry. I'm looking forward to some spare time to start the little project that I have in mind ... stay tuned.

This is a miniature fine bowl in figured Queensland maple.

I made a really big bowl a few years ago and named it "The Wedding Bowl" ... long story. It was stunning ... great shape and highly figured. One of the off-cuts from the initial shaping contained some of the figure wood, so I kept it ... and finally got around to doing something.
The piece of wood was only small ... at about 10 inches long ... so, my options were limited. I chose to create a miniature which reflected the shape and style of the original wedding bowl.
I have done several miniatures in the past and they always attract attention. This is probably my favourite to date.

I completed this pair of dishes in April 2009. They are borne of reclaimed building timber stock and are quite highly figured.

I completed three shallow dishes in jarrah a while back. They are all sold already, although I'm only just gettinf to putting them on the site now.

As often happens, I was cutting a board of jarrah into utensil blanks for sale at FOREST TREASURES when it became apparent that the figuring in the wood would be better utilized in something of a bit more 'displayable' nature. Hence, a set of dishes.
The board was only an inch thick so the dishes are quite shallow. They still have a nice freeform flowing shape though ... and great color.
It's always quite a challenge to create depth and shape into a form from a thin piece of wood ... there's not a lot of scope there. In fact, this wouldn't work at all if it wasn't for the fact that the forms I create are so thin. I was quite happy with the way these pieces finished up.
