A couple years ago, my friend Pam asked me to make a bowl in Purple Heart for her. I just got it finished. The piece of wood had several knots and imperfections, so I had to make some decisions early about the final outcome of the form. I opted for a very simple shape that had nice fluid lines and presented concentric growth rings.
Purple Heart finishes to a beautiful pink/purple colour. There is no other wood on the planet that compares to it. As is common, this particular piece of wood had a subtle figuring through it also.

I made these two small maple bowls from slab stock from a local timber merchant. The wood wasn’t figured at all, but the orientation of the grain is complimentary to the shapes I created. I kept the finish to a low satin, giving these two pieces a very contemporary look and feel.

The timber merchant who I purchase most of my rough sawn wood from (for making utensils :: Forest Treasures) was cleaning out his warehouse a little while back and unearthed a number of slabs of Queensland Maple and other local species. Most of the maple was highly figured premium stock. I bought as much as I could afford ... especially since most of it was probably cut at least 20 years ago.
The wood I made this bowl from was typical of the figuring through most of this stock. It wasn’t the most figured maple I had ever seen, but it certainly was very nice.
The shape worked nicely and I managed to incorporate a little bit of natural edge to juxtapose the uniformity. The finish is pretty much satin with just enough gloss to bring out the highlights in the figuring.

I've created this piece as a gift of appreciation for one of my valued customers who has purchased my work regularly over the last 5 years or so.
It was born of a small piece of Australian red cedar cut from a slab destined for other work. This, like much of my stockpiled cedar, was from a very old tree. The colour is deep and there is nice grain definition.
Although only a small bowl, I wanted to create a very curvaceous piece in similar style to my larger works ... so, I guess it's almost a miniature.
