NEWS

New works and news from Australian sculpture artist Bob Gilmour. Bob is based near Port Douglas in the tropical north of the country and creates curvaceous forms and sculpture in wood and other media.

Purchase page now available for fine bowls

I just spent the last couple days implementing basic purchasing ability on this (Artforms) website. Previously, it has been 'visual' only. Because all of my work is so 'one-off', it's not really necessary or feasible to incorporate a full shopping cart just yet ... every piece has different shipping requirements etc.

Now, when you click a purchase link, you'll be taken to an email form which will start a dialogue between us and the transaction will be performed manually. The form asks for a destination country and zip code, so I can work out shipping cost estimates and transit times and return all of the relevant information in the first reply email.

I've added this feature because I'm hopefully not too far off putting up a page of functional artforms which cross the border as 'homewares'. At present, most of my fine display works are usually sold (locally) either by the time they make it to the website or shortly thereafter. I'm also planning to add a simple filtering script soon so visitors can select to display only 'available' works ... in case someone actually wants to 'buy' something.

Another Fine Bowl in Maple Silkwood

HERE is one of my most recently finished pieces.

Fine Bowl in Maple Silkwood by Bob Gilmour

This is the second piece I have created from a piece of maple silkwood given to me by one of the oldest timber cutting families in the area where I live.

Queensland Maple, and it's less common relative Maple Silkwood, are prominent trees in the coastal range forests and rainforest in the Julatten area (north of Cairns). The maples are fine furniture timbers in this country.

Maple silkwood is not common at all any more and is desirable because of it's subtle figuring and range of colors. When Bill Mckean tossed a piece of silkwood out of his ute on the ground in front of me back in about 2002, I eagerly accepted it.

This bowl, and also the previous smaller bowl, deviate a little from my usual style and feature a more fuller shape, while still retaining the small base large overhang formula.

I'm pretty happy with this piece.

Two Fine Bowls in Northern Blackwood

HERE are two small bowls in North Queensland Blackwood.

Two Fine Bowls in Northern Blackwood by Bob Gilmour

I received a quantity of offcut wood from a local joinery who build timber slab furniture (and other things). There was quite a variety including Queensland Maple, Blackbean, Kauri, Raintree and Blackwood. The two current bowls were created from a couple of small pieces of blackwood.

Our (Northern) Blackwood is also more usually known as Black Wattle. I often use the name Blackwood, though.

The pieces of wood were only small and about 2 inches thick, but the colour was dark and rich. I believe I achieved pretty nice shape and the two pieces look great together on display.

The finish on these bowls is oil, but a slightly different process to my usual display oil finish, so the items could be used as functional food servers if desired.
