Serving Dishes in Queensland Kauri
My main interest is form - creating nice organic shapes. While much of my work evolves as fine display pieces, I also create a range of functional items through which the same interest in form is conveyed. The functional items allow me to create pleasing shapes in a shorter time frame because the finishing process is quicker.
This pair of shallow bowls is created from Queensland Kauri, a rainforest emergent conifer (softwood) which grows from about Northern New South Wales right up to Far North Queensland. Because kauri wood is very uniform in texture and extremely stable, it is ideal for functional serving dishes. It is also very easy to work.
Creating the functional items satisfies some desire to actually make shapes and finish them in a timely manner. The gallery finish on the display work is time-consuming and accounts for much of the time committment in the piece - far more than the actual creation of form. It's nice to make some work from time to time, where creation of the form is the main component of the work and I don't have to spend 10 hours or so sanding and finishing.
